On August 16, the National Bureau of Statistics released the energy production in July 2021. In July, the year-on-year decline in industrial raw coal production above designated size narrowed, crude oil production was basically stable, the growth rate of natural gas production slowed down, and the growth rate of power production accelerated. Taking July 2019 as the base period, the two-year average growth rate of raw coal production declined, the growth of crude oil production remained stable, and the production of natural gas and electricity grew rapidly. Among them, in July, thermal power, nuclear power, and wind power all grew rapidly, the decline in hydropower narrowed, and solar power generation fell slightly.

1. raw coal, crude oil and natural gas production and related conditions

The decline in raw coal production narrowed. In July, 0.31 billion tons of raw coal were produced, down 3.3 percent year-on-year, 1.7 percentage points lower than the previous month, down 6.9 percent from the same period in 2019, a two-year average decline of 3.5 percent, and an average daily output of 10.13 million tons; 30.18 million tons of coal were imported, up 15.6 percent year-on-year.

From January to July, 2.26 billion tons of raw coal were produced, up 4.9 percent year-on-year and 4.8 percent over the same period in 2019, with a two-year average increase of 2.4 percent; 169.74 million tons of coal were imported, down 15.0 percent year-on-year.

The comprehensive trading price of port coal continued to rise. On July 30, the comprehensive transaction prices of 5500 kcal, 5000 kcal and 4500 kcal thermal coal in Qinhuangdao Port were 845 yuan, 773 yuan and 686 yuan per ton respectively, up 26 yuan, 34 yuan and 38 yuan respectively from June 25.

Crude oil production increased steadily, and the processing volume changed from rising to falling. In July, 16.87 million tons of crude oil were produced, up 2.5 percent year-on-year and 3.1 percent over the same period in 2019, with a two-year average increase of 1.5 percent and an average daily output of 544000 tons; 59.06 million tons of crude oil were processed, down 0.9 percent year-on-year, up 11.4 percent over the same period in 2019, with a two-year average increase of 5.6 percent and an average daily processing of 1.905 million tons.

In January-July, 116.21 million tons of crude oil were produced, up 2.4 percent year-on-year, up 3.9 percent from the same period in 2019 and an average two-year increase of 1.9 percent, while 412.41 million tons of crude oil were processed, up 8.9 percent year-on-year, up 11.4 percent from the same period in 2019 and an average two-year increase of 5.5 percent.

The decline in crude oil imports narrowed and international crude oil prices fluctuated at high levels. In July, 41.24 million tons of crude oil were imported, down 19.6 percent from a year earlier. From January to July, 301.83 million tons of crude oil were imported, down 5.6 percent from a year earlier. Growth in natural gas production has slowed. In July, 15.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas was produced, up 9.8 percent year-on-year, down 3.3 percentage points from the previous month and up 15.1 percent from the same period in 2019, with a two-year average increase of 7.3 percent and an average daily output of 0.51 billion cubic meters.

From January to July, 120.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas was produced, up 10.7 percent year-on-year, up 21.2 percent from the same period in 2019, and an average two-year increase of 10.1 percent.

Natural gas imports are growing rapidly. In July, 9.34 million tons of natural gas were imported, up 27.0 percent year-on-year. From January to July, 68.96 million tons of natural gas were imported, up 24.0 percent year on year.

2. Electricity Production

Electricity production accelerated. In July, power generation 758.6 billion kilowatt-hours, up 9.6 percent year-on-year, 2.2 percentage points faster than the previous month, 11.7 percent higher than the same period in 2019, a two-year average increase of 5.7 percent, and an average daily average of 24.47 billion kilowatt-hours of power generation. From January to July, power generation 4645 billion kWh, up 13.2 percent year-on-year, up 12.2 percent from the same period in 2019, and a two-year average increase of 5.9 percent.

In terms of varieties, in July, thermal power, nuclear power, and wind power all grew rapidly, the decline in hydropower narrowed, and solar power generation fell slightly. Among them, thermal power increased by 12.7 percent year-on-year, with an average two-year growth of 5.8 percent based on July 2019; hydropower decreased by 4.3 percent, with an average two-year growth of 0.8 percent; nuclear power increased by 14.4 percent, with an average two-year growth of 10.5 percent; wind power increased by 25.4 percent, with an average two-year growth of 24.3 percent; and solar power increased by 12.1 percent, with an average two-year growth of 5.5 percent.
